FROM SCHOOL TO THE FORGE: THE STORY OF IGNASI FERRER

NOT ALL LEGENDS ARE BORN ON THE BATTLEFIELD. SOME BEGIN IN A CLASSROOM, WITH A MINIATURE SCULPTED FROM PIPE REPAIR PASTE.

A MEETING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

It was the 90s when I met my best friend, Felix Paniagua, at school. He always had a unique vision, but one day, he showed up with something that left me speechless: an orc miniature he had sculpted using pipe repair paste.

The moment I saw it, I knew it had something special, a kind of magic. But what truly obsessed me was a question:

"There must be a way to make copies of this. We just need to figure out how."

THE QUEST TO TURN A DREAM INTO REALITY

Back then, finding information on how to make miniatures was nearly impossible. There was no Internet, no tutorials, no Google. With Felix’s orc in hand, I went from jewelers to coin makers, to trophy workshops, searching for answers. The reaction was always the same: puzzled looks. They saw me as a dreamer chasing an impossible obsession.

After countless rejections, I finally found Enrique, a microfusion expert who, for the first time, didn’t think I was crazy. He knew nothing about miniatures, but he accepted the challenge and joined our madness.

DRAGONRUNE: THE FIRST BIG STEP

We had no money to pay for Enrique’s tests, so Felix, who was studying computer science at the time, developed a database software for him in exchange for his help. That became our currency.

We experimented, failed, and tried again. The first orc was lost in the process, but it left us with something far more valuable: knowledge. And with that knowledge, DragonRune, our first miniature company, was born.

DragonRune marked our debut in the industry, and although it no longer belongs to us today, it was the first big step that led us to what came next.

THE LEGACY CONTINUES

Today, I am Head of Production at Avatars of War, and looking back, I feel immense pride. Over the last 20 years at Avatars of War, we have explored almost every method of miniature production: metal spin-casting, vacuum-cast resin, Siocast, HIPS plastic, PVC plastic, and 3D printing.

In 2024, we made a crucial decision: to leave metal behind—the material that started it all. It wasn’t easy, but it’s part of our evolution.

Yet, our mission remains unchanged: to capture the essence of the Golden Age and bring it into the 21st century. We want every Avatars of War miniature to impress from the moment it is deployed and to evoke the same emotion I felt in the 90s when I first saw Felix’s orc.

MORE THAN A JOB, A LEGENDARY JOURNEY

Avatars of War is not just about producing miniatures—it’s about forging legends. From that first miniature sculpted from pipe repair paste, to the most legendary heroes created with cutting-edge 3D technology, everything we do has a purpose:

To revive the greatness of the Golden Age and forge the future of miniatures.

And to think it all started with an orc sculpted from pipe repair paste and two school kids who refused to give up.
